Rebooting the Client Platform Blog

It’s been a while, but it’s nice to see Tim Sneath’s blog spring back into life. “The Client Platform” is a big old topic to talk about but from the posts of the past couple of weeks it looks like HTML5 and IE9 are the current order of the day.

Take a look and there are some nice videos covering some of the recent IE9 Beauty of the Web launch. Like this one.

Oh yeah – Tim is also looking to hire someone to be an IE9/HTML5 Technical Evangelist. He says it’s the best job in the company, but I thought that was mine…

That #ie9 Thing

Did we launch something yesterday? Oh yes… that was it… the IE9 beta. It’s been an interesting time playing with the platform previews since IE9 was announced at MIX and it was great to get access to the browser chrome and development capabilities. You can grab it from here.

Of course the team have been busy looking at it from their point of view and if you haven’t seen this stuff then take a look.

I also really enjoyed Scott Hanselman’s developer-focussed post- definitely worth a read. If you really want to get right behind the detail of IE9 then as always I’d drink from the firehose that is the IE blog.

The Beauty of the Web launch site contains a load of great demos focussed on the various aspects of IE9 capabilities such as HTML5 and GPU-acceleration and also just some great examples of what the future holds for the web. I highly recommend a look at:

All of which are a bit of a showcase for HTML5 and CSS3. Enjoy and onward!

IE9 Preview 3 (and some questions answered)

I know you already know about IE9 Preview 3 being available, I’ve just been a bit bogged down in those activities that shall be known as “planning” which is more of a time sink that you might think. If you’re thinking “he’s just been watching the footy” then you’re cynical but astute.

If I was more social media savvy, I’d probably invent some sort of concept around “late-blogging”: the process of not stressing over the realtime news like the Twitterati, or live-blogging on your knee in the dark instead of enjoying the event, but rather doing the whole thing at a leisurely pace and hoovering up the (altogether vaster) long tail audience. But I’m not.

There’s a bunch of information on this particular preview at the IE Blog (surprisingly enough) and Sara answered a few questions she heard quite frequently at WebDirections the other week. I’m delighted that we’re moving in this direction with IE9 from a personal perspective (I am a lapsed web developer dontcha know?) and it seems that that’s the case as I see both Mashable and even Tim Anderson being positive.

For me, the things that stand out are the Acid3 compliancy - moving along nicely at 83/100 - and the implementation of Canvas, video, audio and Web Fonts.

Sidenote: If you are working with IE8 then MikeO has just published some info and practices on a load of development we’ve seen this year from customers.
